Carriers up Da Nang flight frequency as Covid-19 outbreak eases

Vietnamese carriers will increase its flight frequency to Da Nang from Hanoi and HCMC starting Friday given the country’s Covid-19 situation improving.

From Friday until September 15, national carrier Vietnam Airlines will operate two daily round trips from Hanoi and three from HCMC to Da Nang City, the epicenter of the country’s second Covid-19 outbreak wave and a popular tourism hotspot in central Vietnam.

Starting September 16 until the end of the month, its daily round trips from Hanoi to Da Nang will increase to four a day and from HCMC to five.

The flight schedule for October will be announced later depending on the pandemic situation, Vietnam Airlines said in a statement.

From Monday until Thursday, Vietnam Airlines operated one round trip flight a day from Hanoi and HCMC to Da Nang after the Transport Ministry allowed the resumption of public transport services to and from the city from Monday onwards.

Vietjet Air and Bamboo Airways will also increase the frequency of round trip flights to Da Nang to two a day from Friday instead of one as previous days.

The airlines will still require social distancing on aircraft to limit the risk of infection and for passengers to wear face masks for the entire duration of the flight. All crew members and technicians will wear protective equipment.

Da Nang has gone 13 days without new domestic infections, the city’s Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Fighting said Wednesday.

The city has also agreed to reopen its public beaches and allow restaurants and eateries to offer eat-in services from Friday. The popular tourism hub has a coastline of 30 km and is home to many of Vietnam’s most beautiful beaches like My Khe, Non Nuoc, and Nam O.

Before the second outbreak of the virus began in Da Nang on July 25, after the country’s 99-day streak of no community transmission, there were 20 flights a day from Hanoi and HCMC to the central city.

Da Nang eased its social distancing measures from September 5 but has kept its ban on “non-essential services” like karaoke parlors, bars and dance clubs.

VinFast enters luxury segment with new SUV

Vietnamese automaker VinFast has launched a luxury SUV, the VinFast President, to take on global brands like Lexus and Mercedes.

To cost VND4.6 billion ($198,200), the seven-seater looks similar to VinFast’s first SUV, the Lux SA2.0, but with more advanced technologies and frills like massage and heated seats.

Its 420HP V8 engine could go from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in 6.8 seconds and offers a top speed of nearly 300 kph.

VinFast will produce only 500 units and sell them exclusively in Vietnam. The first 100 customers will get a 17 percent discount on the price.

In its segment, the VinFast President costs 45 percent lower than the Lexus LX 570 and 33 percent lower than the BMW X7.

Industry insiders admitted it lacks some premium features often seen in luxury cars such as captain’s chairs, TV screens and a high-end sound system.

The vehicle signifies the ambition of VinFast, a unit of Vietnam’s largest conglomerate, Vingroup, to enter all segments of the auto market after bringing out its first vehicle in July last year.

Its other offerings are the VinFast Fadil hatchback, Lux A2.0 sedan and Lux SA2.0 SUV.

The company sold 5,124 cars in the first quarter of this year to rank fifth in sales behind Hyundai, Toyota, Kia, and Honda.

Students build a Batmobile with eye on movie accessories

A group of students in Hanoi have tried to recreate the famous Batmobile of Batman with a limited VND 500 million ( $21,500) budget.

Nguyen Dac Chung, a 23-year-old student of the Hanoi University of Architecture started building the automobile 10 months ago with his friends. They even hired some extra people to speed up the processThe Vietnamese Batmobile is almost complete, but not ready to hit the road yet.

Chung said he was inspired to embark on this project by his passion for the original version of the Batmobile in the Christopher Nolan’s 2008 blockbuster “The Dark Knight”. He also saw it as a potential breakthrough in the cosplay career that he is perusing.

Chung first used a 3D drawing because he couldn’t find the blueprint of the original version used in the movie. The car’s body is made of thermoplastic, iron pipes and glue. The falcon-wing doors are designed to open exactly like in the movie.

The front wheels are designed independently because they are the hardest part during the operational design and the team is looking to revise this detail to make the car able to run.

The rear of the car has been raised up with dual tires of extra large size. Chung ordered six of them for over VND100 million, using borrowings as well as money earned from his business of selling cosplay accessories. Raising money was one of the reasons it has taken such a long time to complete the project.

The exhaust system at the back is actually a jet engine in the original version, so Chung made a fake one using cartons, his limited finances not allowing the use of more expensive materials.

The flaps can be adjusted to go high and low with compressed air pipes. Chung used the technical expertise of his friends to complete the hydraulic system and electrical parts.

The Batmobile uses sportscar seats. Except for the engine, all other parts were purchased new and installed by the team.

The interior is still incomplete with many unfinished details. No safety features or entertainment accessories have been used.

The Batmobile has a 400 cc engine and if it is able to run, it can reach a speed of 90 kilometers per hour. However, the vehicle won’t run on normal roads in normal condition due to technical factors and traffic regulations, Chung said

F1 cancels Hanoi 2020 schedule

Four last-minute races have been added to the 2020 F1 calendar, with Hanoi absent from the new list.

Turkey, Bahrain (hosting two races), and Abu Dhabi will be part of the revised season, bringing the total number of races to 17, Formula One stated Tuesday.

A number of races in the revised 2020 season will be open to a limited number of fans, including hospitality, it said.

While three races will be hosted in Asia this year, the Vietnamese Grand Prix in Hanoi did not make the list, along with the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

“We are all disappointed that we have not been able to return to some of our planned races this year,” F1 said.

The schedule for the postponed Hanoi debut will be announced by F1 after the season ends.

The Turkish Grand Prix will occur on November 15, before the back-to-back races in Bahrain on November 29 and December 6. The season concluding Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will take place on December 13.

In early July, with the pandemic contained in Vietnam, Hanoi’s authorities had mentioned the possibility of commencing the race in November.

However, the second Covid-19 wave hit the country in late July after more than three months with no community transmission, with Da Nang in central Vietnam the new hotspot. A total 547 people have been infected since and 28 have died.

Since the start of the pandemic, Hanoi has recorded 156 cases, of which 145 have recovered.

The highly anticipated Vietnamese Grand Prix, the first F1 race in Vietnam, has been postponed since March because of Covid-19. The race wil be held on Hanoi Street Circuit, a temporary track next to My Dinh National Stadium.

Hanoi already signed a 10-year contract to host the race starting this year.
